Metamorphosis was released in 2003 as a part of Pharaonic Guardian but was banned in September 2007. The card was easy to throw into any deck and was banned due to the power level of the card. However, this does bring up the question “Why is Metamorphosis Banned?”
What does Metamorphosis do?
Metamorphosis is a normal spell that allows you to tribute a monster in order to special summon a fusion monster with the same level from your extra deck. Fusion monsters are cards that typically require multiple cards to get out, and they are balanced around this fact. However, this card can let your bypass this in order to just special summon the desired fusion card. The card doesn’t have a downsize besides the tribute cost.
Metamorphosis fits everywhere
If you run a deck with monsters and have fusion monsters in your extra deck then you might as well throw this card in as well. Another factor is that you can just throw in this card and a good fusion monster into any deck. The player doesn’t need any of the fusion materials in the deck just this card. This is how the card was mostly used while it was legal.
Probably the most famous use of this card was during Goat Format. Sheep Tokens were typically on the field due to the effect of Scapegoat. However, these tokens just so happen to be a level one monster. This makes them a target for the card Thousand-Eyes Restrict which is an insanely dominant card. Beyond this players could also use the very popular Magician of Faith as a target to bring Thousand-Eyes Restrict out. Of course, you could also just throw in a bunch of good Fusions in your extra deck so you can metamorphosis every monster.
Can Metamorphosis be unbanned?
No. Metamorphosis has been banned for a long time, and now the amount of fusion monsters has increased. The other problem is that this card is just so easy to slot into any deck. However, the only downside I can see is that the extra decks have become way more important. When the card was first banned the deck the extra deck had no limit. However, the card is either going to make fusion decks too good or become an auto-include in every deck.
