Why is Kaiser Colosseum Banned?

Kaiser Colosseum was released in 2003 as a part of Magician’s Force but didn’t see the ban list until August 2016. This card had a huge tenure of being unlimited, and the ban seemed to have come out of the no where. This brings up the question “Why is Kaiser Colosseum Banned?”

What does Kaiser Colosseum do?

Kaiser Colosseum is a confusing card. Kaiser Colosseum is a continuous spell card. If there is 1 or more monsters on the field of the person who has this card in play, the opponent cannot place a monster on the field if their number of monsters would exceed the number of monsters that are on the field of this card’s controller. However, this card doesn’t affect the other already activated cards.

For example, if I had one Battlin’ Boxer Lead Yoke on the field my opponent could not play more than one monster on their side of the field implying that it is the only monster on my side of the field. The card is hard to explain, and this of course leads to problems.

Kaiser Colosseum was a Rule Nightmare

Kaiser Colosseum lead to a lot of weird cases. I will outline some of them, but this is far from an extensive list.

Destiny Hero – Dark Angel is probably the card that got it banned. This is another confusing card, so I will let you read the text that is linked. Essentially with this card you can lock your opponent out of using any spell cards or effects, and this paired with Kaiser Colosseum also means they can’t play any more monsters. The lock can be broken, but it still isn’t fun. Royal Decree made the locks even worse.

Ojama Trio is also a troubling card. The summons your opponent three Ojama tokens. These tokens can not be tributed. This puts your opponent in a not-fun position. It is kind of a funny lock, but still anti-fun.

Can Kaiser Colosseum be Unbanned?

I think so. The card is good, but kind of wonky. I think Konami could limit it to see if people are even going to lock each other. The combos would be too inconsistent in my opinion. However, Konami does take a stance against decks that oppressively lock out their opponents. Despite this, the card is not game-ending like some of the other banned cards. If this were to be limited in the next ban list I wouldn’t be surprised.
