This was one of my most hyped-up games of the year, and I feel a way certain way about it. It is a labor of love, but how far can love get a game.
Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl was created by the fellows over at Ludosity who have a great track record of making games. I don’t know what they did to get access to the Nickelodeon ips, but it seemed like a match made in heaven.
Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl or NASB from this point on is a platform fighter starring characters from the history of Nickelodeon. However, the game is missing quite a bit of the most famous characters in that sphere.
I love platform fighters, and this is by far one of the most smooth I have ever played. All of the characters feel so great to play and feel fleshed out. I would say that the core gameplay is good, but when you get past that it starts to fall apart.
A Shell of a Game
The game is missing a lot of quality-of-life features that feel like a given for this genre. The characters have no voice lines, so the characters do not feel like who they are in the show. Spongebob’s voice is as iconic as his appearance, and without the voice, a huge piece of the character is gone.
The game is also missing music from the series that the levels are from. All of these factors make the Nickelodeon theming feel like just a coat of paint.
This is just the tip of the iceberg, and I wrote another article all about things that were not at release. The game is fun, but it is missing so much.
I gave the game a fair shot, but in the end, I couldn’t play it for long. I got the Platinum trophy of the game, but after that I did everything.
Conclusion
This is a hard score to give. The gameplay is fantastic and was a joy to play. However, so many factors in the game keep from playing it. Despite this, I have not had a desire to play the game after the platinum.
5.2
A game that is made for fanatics of the Platform Fighter genre, but has little for anyone else.
