Mods have had a grand history in the world of video games. However, you may not know that some of the games you have played were first mods. Quake is one of the most modded franchises ever. It is only comparable to games such as Minecraft, Half-Life, and a couple of others.
X-Men: The Ravages of Apocalypse
X-Men: The Ravages of Apocalypse is a fully licensed mod by Marvel of the first Quake game. However, you still need to own a copy of the original Quake downloaded in order to play. The game was released at retail. Because of that, the game is almost more of an expansion than a stand-alone.
Team Fortress
Before TF2, the game original Team Fortress was created as a mod for the original Quake game. However, the mod was eventually bought by Valve. The game was then remade in the source engine. Despite this, the game became the most popular as the game Team Fortress 2 was released in 2007.

Rocket Arena is one of the most classic mods ever and was released soon after the original release of Quake. However, the mod was also mad for Quake II, Quake III, Half-Life, and more. This is one of the most influential mods and set the groundwork for multiplayer games of the future.
Nexuiz
Nexuiz is a mod of the original Quake created in 2001 and is a deathmatch arena game. It includes single-player content as well as a multiplayer matchmaking portion. The game is actually under the open-source GNU General Public License. However, an official fork of the game was released in 2012 by THQ.
Tremulous
Tremulous is a mod of Quake III that was released in 2006 and is under the GNU General Public License. The game has players fight each other as either the humans or the opposing aliens to destroy their base. The game last received an update in 2011. However, the game is still fondly remembered.
World of Padman
World of Padman is a mod of Quake III arena that is based on the comic character from Playstation Magazine. This is one of the oddest mods to be released widely. However, the game has fallen into obscurity as the character is just an oddity.
D-Day: Normandy
D-Day: Normandy is a mod of Quake II. The game is an imagination of the events that took place in Normandy as a part of World War II. It is a team-based game that has the players play as either the axis or allies during this event.
Smokin’ Guns
Smokin’ Guns is a mod of Quake III and is a spaghetti western version of the game. However, the game is a total conversion and has new weapons and game modes. Oddly, the western genre has not been explored enough by video games, and this is a fun take on the genre.
Action Quake 2
Action Quake 2 is a mod of the second Quake game and is an attempt to make the game feel more like an action movie. However, quite a bit was added to the game to make it have this feel. Besides that, the game had a huge following and had an active player base into the 2010s.
